Interview - Interdisciplinary research analyzed the impacts of introducing new technologies in healthcare

A review research based on observational studies analyzed the consequences of the introduction of new technologies in the health sector and how they change professional roles and health services.

Heloise Fernandes Agreli, professor at the Department of Professional Guidance at the School of Nursing (EE) at USP who carries out research related to the health workforce and interprofessionality, developed a typology to understand the redistribution of work in health professionals with the arrival of a new technology. “The first step is to understand that many technologies are not just introduced into healthcare and keep jobs the same. Technologies such as telemedicine and robots that assist in surgeries change health services and professional roles”, explains Heloise. The study was published in the British Medical Journal Leader, the result of research in partnership with the Emlyon Business School, in France and Univeristy of Sao Paulo. It included the analysis of publications not only in the health area, but also in administration and management, in an interdisciplinary approach.

Interview - Award for best doctoral thesis in Nursing Research in Brazil - Collaborative interprofessional practice and teamwork climate in Primary Health Care

Graduated in Nursing from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), specialized in Service Management of the Unified Health System (Fiocruz) and Family Health (Unifesp). She has a master's degree in Health Sciences from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a PhD in Health Sciences with guidance from the Department of Professional Guidance (School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo) and co-supervision from the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Health Sciences , University of Southampton (United Kingdom). His thesis “Collaborative interprofessional practice and teamwork climate in Primary Health Care” was one of the winners of the 2018 CAPES Thesis Award.

Where did your interest in working on the topic of your thesis come from?

The doctorate was the way I found to respond to the concerns of my daily life as manager of a Basic Health Unit, of the Family Health Strategy: what made the teams more effective? How to improve interprofessional collaboration in teams and between teams? These were some of my concerns. In the Family Health Strategy, follow-up in the health service is carried out by the team and not by a specific professional. Team members need to work effectively so that health care honors the basic principle of comprehensiveness. Every day I noticed that, in the same institution, with the same leadership and similar resources, the teams presented very different indicators in terms of resolution and productivity. I was interested in understanding what aspects could explain the differences between the teams. I was very bothered by the strong fragmentation I observed between the actions carried out by professionals from different areas. He noticed that the lack of interprofessional collaboration generated a very negative impact on care: users of health services often “got lost” between recommendations from nurses, specialist doctors, general practitioners, psychologists, social workers, etc. I wanted to study a way to improve collaboration between professionals and between teams.
